    About the Award

The Civic Courage Award celebrates individuals who embody the values of respect, equality and pluralism, the civic ideals at the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most enduring traditions.

    About the Recipient

Born in Zvornik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nermana Huskić was only 5 years old when the war began. Her family fled their hometown to a neighboring "safe" village, but it was nevertheless under constant attack. After the end of the war, she, her mother and brother were approved to move to St. Louis as refugees. Huskić was 11 at the time. In 2017, Huskić founded the organization RukaNade. RukaNade means 'hand of hope' in Bosnian, and is a nonprofit that works with St. Louis’s homeless population, seniors, and youth, as well as families and orphans in Bosnia. Huskić credits her religion, upbringing, and life experience for choosing social and humanitarian work as her mission.
